  2. Give an overview of the main redevelopment and the features that remain.
  3. Describe the 1950 layout using clear directional references.

Band 7.0

The diagrams give information about the construction of buildings in West Park Secondary school from the period of 1950 to 2010. Firstly, the school (main building) throughout the period remained unchanged. In contrast, from the period 1950 to 1980, houses and farmland completely disappeared from the map. Secondly, if we observe the two diagrams of the site, further changes can be seen by 2010. Overall, the school’s main building and playground remained in the same eastern parts of the site, while the surrounding land was substantially redeveloped. By 1980, the houses on the north-west side and the farmland to the south-west had been removed. A car park occupied the north-western area, a science block was built between it and the school, and a sports field replaced the farmland. The main building remained in the north-east, with the playground directly south of it. By 2010, the car park extended along the western side of the site, while the sports field was relocated to the southern centre, between the car park and playground. The science block remained immediately west of the main building. Thus, the principal change was the replacement of housing and farmland with facilities for parking, science and sport, while the school and playground were retained.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Replace the opening phrase “construction of buildings” with a concise description of the site’s changes, then state the main overall pattern before listing details.
2
Use one consistent spatial framework—such as north, south, east and west—to make the locations of the car park, science block, sports field and playground easy to compare.
3
Review time phrases and sentence subjects: use “between 1950 and 2010,” and name the feature directly instead of using parenthetical labels.
