Band 6.0

The maps illustrate how West Park Secondary School has transformed over time, 1950, 1980, and 2010. Overall, it can be seen that the school had undergone some significant changes over this period with the expansion of the school building, as well as the addition of sports field and car park. From the diagrams, the first map shows the site in 1950, when houses occupied the north-west corner, farmland lay directly below them, and the school and playground were on the eastern side. The school was in the north-east, with the playground to its south. By 1980, the houses and farmland had disappeared. A car park was built in the north-west, while a science block was added between it and the main school building. The sports field took up the south-west area, and the playground remained in the south-east. In 2010, the science block and main school building were still along the northern part of the site, although the science block was positioned to the left of the main building. The car park had expanded considerably, covering most of the western side and extending into the south. The sports field had become a narrow area near the lower middle, while the playground continued to occupy the south-east corner.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Rewrite the overview to name the two biggest changes directly: the replacement of houses and farmland, and the later growth of the car park.
2
Check every singular countable facility name in the opening and add an article where needed, such as “a sports field” and “a car park.”
3
Use one consistent spatial route for each date—north to south, then west to east—to reduce repetition and make comparisons easier to track.
