Band 7.0

The drawings below illustrate West Park Secondary School’s development since it was built in 1950. Overall, the school’s main building remained the same. There were various changes made to other parts of the school, especially the eastern side. At first, in 1950, the school consisted of only two areas, the main building and a playground. However, the plan also shows houses and farmland on the western side, so the site actually contained four main areas. By 1980, the houses and farmland had been replaced. A car park occupied the north-western section, while a sports field covered the south-western area. A science block had also been added between the car park and the main school building. The playground remained in the south-east, and the school building continued to stand beside the main road. By 2010, the car park occupied much of the western side, with the sports field repositioned in a narrower area immediately to its east. The science block lay between the car park and the school building, with the sports field directly below it. The playground remained in the south-east, and the main road was unchanged. Overall, the key developments were the replacement of housing and farmland with school facilities, while the main building and playground stayed in place.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
List all four areas visible in 1950—main building, playground, houses and farmland—rather than saying there were only two.
2
Make the overview reflect the whole site: note that the main road, school building and playground remained, while the western areas were redeveloped.
3
Compare locations precisely by tracking the car park on the west, the science block beside the school, and the sports field’s position between 1980 and 2010.
