Band 6.0

The diagram illustrates the differences in West Park Secondary School’s constructions in 1950, 1980 and 2010. Overall, through a 60 year period, the West Park Secondary School had changed in buildings and expansion. However, the location of the main building of the school was constant. From 1950 to 1980, there were changes in buildings as the houses and farmland were removed and replaced by new facilities. By 1980, the houses had given way to a car park and a science block, while the farmland had become a sports field. The school building remained in the upper-right part of the site, and the playground continued to occupy the lower-right area. In 2010, the car park had expanded southwards and occupied most of the western side. The sports field was reduced and moved towards the centre of the site, below the science block. The science block remained beside the main school building, which stayed in the north-east. The playground also remained in the south-east. In summary, the site became more developed, with new parking and sports facilities, while the main school and playground retained their general positions.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Write a one-sentence overview that names the major change (the site became more developed) and the main features that stayed in place (the main school and playground).
2
For each period, compare locations directly: state what replaced the houses and farmland, then describe how the car park and sports field changed by 2010.
3
After drafting, check every phrase describing time or change, including “over a 60-year period,” “was replaced by,” and “expanded,” for natural grammar and accurate map meaning.
