Ideas to explore

  • Describe the process as a sequence from the farm to retail, rather than treating the products as unrelated items.
  • Mention the cold-storage stage and daily tanker delivery as important links between milking and dairy processing.
  • Distinguish the two visible product outcomes: pasteurized, packaged milk and cheese, cream and butter.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce what the diagram depicts.
  2. Give an overview of the start, end and main phases.
  3. Describe milking, refrigerated storage and tanker delivery in sequence.
  4. Explain the outputs at the dairy and finish with transport to shops.

Band 8.0

The provided illustration depicts the stages involved in the production of pasteurized milk and other dairy products that are eventually supplied to supermarkets. The process begins with cows being milked twice daily, followed by refrigerated storage of the milk. Subsequently, the milk is transported to the dairy. Inside the dairy, quality tests are conducted, and the milk is checked before being directed into one of two product routes. One stream is pasteurised and packaged, and this finished milk is then delivered to supermarkets and shops. The other stream is used to make cheese, cream and butter. Overall, the process starts with cows grazing and being milked and ends with packaged milk reaching retailers, alongside the production of three other dairy items. On the farm, milking takes place twice a day, while the milk is kept cold until a tanker collects it for the daily journey. The quality-control stage at the dairy therefore separates the initial collection and transport stages from the two forms of final production shown. The two outputs are shown as distinct end products.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Add a concise overview immediately after the introduction, identifying the initial farm stages and the split at the dairy into packaged milk and other products.
2
Keep each process stage in sequence and avoid repeating the twice-daily milking detail in both the body and overview.
3
Use parallel wording for the two outcomes: packaged milk is sent to shops, while the remaining route produces cheese, cream and butter.
