Ideas to explore

  • Describe the process as a sequence from the farm to retail, rather than treating the products as unrelated items.
  • Mention the cold-storage stage and daily tanker delivery as important links between milking and dairy processing.
  • Distinguish the two visible product outcomes: pasteurized, packaged milk and cheese, cream and butter.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce what the diagram depicts.
  2. Give an overview of the start, end and main phases.
  3. Describe milking, refrigerated storage and tanker delivery in sequence.
  4. Explain the outputs at the dairy and finish with transport to shops.
Useful vocabulary & examples

Band 7.0

The picture describes the various stages of producing and packaging milk for commercial sale. As can be clearly seen in the diagram, there are seven steps involved in this milk production procedure that starts with cow grazing and ends with the final products reaching the customers. Initially, cows are grazed to produce milk, and then it is transferred to refrigeration storage at the farm. A milk tanker then collects it and delivers it to a dairy every day. At the dairy, the milk is processed to create several products. One output is pasteurised milk, which is packaged, while other products shown are cheese, cream and butter. Finally, the packaged milk and these related goods are sent to supermarkets and shops, where customers can buy them.

Overall, this is a process that begins with cows grazing and ends with dairy goods reaching retail outlets. The early stages focus on milking and keeping the milk cold; transportation takes it to the dairy, where it is processed and prepared for sale. The diagram indicates that cows are milked twice a day and that a tanker makes a delivery to the dairy daily.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Organise the description into three stages: on the farm, processing at the dairy, and delivery to shops.
2
State the overview once, then use the body to explain the milking frequency, refrigerated storage and daily tanker delivery.
3
Replace vague or repetitive wording with precise process verbs, such as “is milked,” “is stored,” “is transported” and “is packaged.”
