Ideas to explore

  • Identify the overall direction of each line separately: margarine and butter fall over the full period, while the low-fat variety rises after it appears and then declines.
  • Highlight key turning points: butter peaks in 1986, margarine reaches a plateau around 100 grams in 1991–1996, and the low-fat line surges by 2001.
  • Mention crossovers where they change the ranking: Low Fat & Reduced Spreads is highest in 2001, while butter and margarine are no longer the leading series.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the graph, naming all three spreads, the years and the unit.
  2. Give an overview that accurately summarises the different overall patterns and the late-period ranking.
  3. Describe butter and margarine together, using their start values, peaks or plateaus and final values.
  4. Describe the later-starting low-fat series and compare its 2001 peak with the other spreads.

Band 9.0

The line graph illustrates the consumption trends of three distinct types of spreads—margarine, low-fat and reduced spreads, and butter—over a period spanning from 1981 to 2007. Overall, while the consumption of both margarine and butter diminished significantly, the popularity of low-fat and reduced spreads surged, culminating in their dominance by the end of the observed period. In 1981, butter was the most widely consumed spread, at about 140 grams, compared with roughly 90 grams of margarine. Butter then peaked at around 160 grams in 1986, before falling sharply to 100 grams in 1991 and continuing down to approximately 70 grams in 1996. By 2007, its consumption had dropped to about 40 grams. Margarine followed a less steady but overall downward pattern. It slipped from 90 to 80 grams between 1981 and 1986, rose to 100 grams in 1991 and remained at this level in 1996. After that, it declined to around 80 grams in 2001 and 40 grams in 2007. Low-fat and reduced spreads were first shown at about 10 grams in 1996, then climbed steeply to approximately 85 grams in 2001 before easing to 70 grams in 2007. They had become the most consumed spread by 2001 and remained in first place at the end.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Use “consumption” consistently instead of “popularity” so your descriptions match what the graph measures.
2
Make the overview compare the two falling series with the rising series, then use the body paragraphs to support that contrast with start, peak, and end values.
3
Keep approximations consistent: use “about” or “approximately” for values read from the chart, and avoid implying that a series began in reality when it is only first shown on the graph.
