Ideas to explore

  • Identify the overall direction of each line separately: margarine and butter fall over the full period, while the low-fat variety rises after it appears and then declines.
  • Highlight key turning points: butter peaks in 1986, margarine reaches a plateau around 100 grams in 1991–1996, and the low-fat line surges by 2001.
  • Mention crossovers where they change the ranking: Low Fat & Reduced Spreads is highest in 2001, while butter and margarine are no longer the leading series.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the graph, naming all three spreads, the years and the unit.
  2. Give an overview that accurately summarises the different overall patterns and the late-period ranking.
  3. Describe butter and margarine together, using their start values, peaks or plateaus and final values.
  4. Describe the later-starting low-fat series and compare its 2001 peak with the other spreads.

Band 7.0

The line graph illustrates the amount of three kinds of spreads(margarine, low fat and reduced spreads and butter) which were consumed over 26 years from 1981 to 2007. Units are measured in grams. Overall, the consumption of margarine and butter decreased over the period given, while for low fat and reduced spreads, it rose. At the start of the period, butter was the most popular spread, at about 140 grams, compared with roughly 90 grams of margarine. Butter consumption then climbed to a peak of around 160 grams in 1986, before falling sharply to 100 grams in 1991. It continued to decline, reaching approximately 70 grams in 1996 and 40 grams by 2007.

Margarine use fluctuated less at first. It fell from about 90 grams to 80 in 1986, then rose to 100 grams in 1991 and remained at this level in 1996. After that, its consumption dropped to around 80 grams in 2001 and 40 grams at the end. The low-fat and reduced spreads category first appears in 1996, at approximately 10 grams. It rose steeply to about 85 grams in 2001, overtaking butter and matching margarine, before slipping to around 70 grams in 2007. Thus, butter had the highest initial figure, whereas the newer spread became the most consumed by 2007.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Rewrite the opening list with a space before the parenthesis and commas that clearly separate margarine, butter, and the low-fat and reduced-spreads category.
2
Make the overview more specific by mentioning both the 2001 peak and the subsequent fall in low-fat and reduced-spreads consumption.
3
Practise comparing series at shared years: describe the approximate values for all three categories in 1996, 2001, and 2007 rather than reporting each line in isolation.
