Ideas to explore

  • The coast begins as the leading destination, dips slightly in 1992, then rises to finish highest.
  • Mountain visitor numbers rise gradually, with little change between 1997 and 2002.
  • The lakes have the most pronounced movement: a steep climb to the 2002 peak followed by a substantial fall.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the chart, locations, unit and period.
  2. Summarise the overall trends and identify the standout peak or change in ranking.
  3. Describe the coast’s figures in time order.
  4. Compare the more gradual mountain trend with the lakes’ sharper rise and fall.

Band 9.0

The line graph illustrates the trends in overseas visitors to three distinct regions—coast, mountains, and lakes—within a specific European country over a twenty-year period from 1987 to 2007. Overall, the data indicates a general upward trajectory in visitor numbers across all three areas, with the coast experiencing the most significant increase and maintaining the highest number of visitors by 2007. However, the lakes recorded the largest net gain over the period: they rose from about 5,000 in 1987 to 50,000 in 2007, despite reaching a peak of roughly 75,000 in 2002. The coast began at 40,000 and dipped slightly to 35,000 in 1992. It then climbed steadily, reaching about 50,000 in 1997 and 65,000 in 2002 before ending at approximately 75,000, the highest figure shown. By comparison, mountain visitors increased more gradually, from 20,000 in 1987 to around 25,000 in 1992 and 30,000 in 1997. The figure changed little by 2002, then rose to about 35,000 in 2007. Thus, the coast finished first, while the lakes fluctuated most sharply and the mountains remained the least visited region throughout.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Check the net change for each series before comparing which one increased most: the lakes rose by about 45,000, while the coast rose by about 35,000.
2
Write a one-sentence overview that distinguishes the coast’s highest final figure from the lakes’ largest overall rise and sharp peak.
3
Use approximate values at the main turning points, then avoid repeating a figure unless it supports a meaningful comparison.
