The graph illustrates the number of foreign tourists who visit the coast, the mountains and the lakes in a European country over a 20-year period from 1987 to 2007. Overall, most people preferred visiting the coast whereas the mountains were visited by least number of tourists throughout this period. Through these years, both the coast and the lakes saw considerable changes, while mountain visits rose more steadily.
In 1987, around 40,000 tourists visited the coast, compared with 20,000 who went to the mountains and 10,000 who visited the lakes. The coastal figure then dipped to approximately 35,000 in 1992, before rising to 50,000 in 1997 and about 65,000 in 2002. It finished at roughly 75,000 in 2007, the highest figure shown.
The number of visitors to the lakes climbed from 10,000 to 40,000 between 1987 and 1997, then rose sharply to a peak of around 75,000 in 2002. By 2007, it had fallen to 50,000. Mountain visits increased more gradually, from 20,000 in 1987 to approximately 35,000 in 2007. The figures show that the lakes, rather than the mountains, had the fewest visitors in 1987; the mountains were the least visited area from 1997 onwards.
