Ideas to explore

  • The coast begins as the leading destination, dips slightly in 1992, then rises to finish highest.
  • Mountain visitor numbers rise gradually, with little change between 1997 and 2002.
  • The lakes have the most pronounced movement: a steep climb to the 2002 peak followed by a substantial fall.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the chart, locations, unit and period.
  2. Summarise the overall trends and identify the standout peak or change in ranking.
  3. Describe the coast’s figures in time order.
  4. Compare the more gradual mountain trend with the lakes’ sharper rise and fall.

Band 6.0

The line graph illustrates the figure for foreign tourists to three different destinations in a European country from 1987 to 2007. Overall, the coast was the most attractive, in contrast, the mountains were least popular. In addition, the dates for tourists to all places became greater towards the end of the period. More specifically , the number of visitors to the coast stood at about 40,000 in 1987, dipped slightly to 35,000 in 1992, and then rose steadily to around 75,000 by 2007. The lakes followed a more dramatic pattern. Their visitor total increased from roughly 10,000 at the beginning to 40,000 in 1997, before reaching a peak of approximately 75,000 in 2002. It then fell to about 50,000 in 2007. By comparison, the mountains attracted around 20,000 visitors in 1987. This figure climbed gradually over the following years, reaching approximately 30,000 in 1997 and remaining close to this level in 2002, before ending at about 35,000. Thus, although visitor numbers for each destination were higher in 2007 than in 1987, the trend was not uniformly upward: the lakes declined after their peak. The coast finished as the most visited area, while the mountains had the lowest totals for most of the period.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Rewrite the overview in two concise comparisons: identify the coast’s overall position and the lakes’ sharp rise and fall.
2
Describe the key turning points with approximate figures: the lakes peak in 2002 at about 75,000, then fall to roughly 50,000.
3
Before submitting, check collocations for quantities (“visitor numbers rose”) and scan for comma splices and spaces before punctuation.
