Ideas to explore
- Compare which series begins higher and which one ends higher; here, production starts slightly above consumption, but consumption finishes much higher.
- Identify the different rates of change: production rises gradually, while consumption accelerates after the early plotted years.
- Mention the axis-label problem: the task’s stated dates do not match the displayed years, and the last year is printed twice.
Suggested structure
- Introduce the graph, measures, and units.
- Give an overview of the overall direction and the main contrast between the two lines.
- Describe production’s starting level, plateau, and gradual later rise.
- Describe consumption’s early stability and sharper increase, then compare the final plotted values.
- Briefly note that the displayed dates are inconsistent or duplicated where this affects interpretation.
Useful vocabulary & examples
- rose gradually
- increased slowly over time
Oil production rose gradually after remaining near 3 million barrels per day.
- remained stable
- stayed at approximately the same level
Production remained stable at around 3 million barrels per day for a period.
- increased substantially
- went up by a large amount
Consumption increased substantially and reached about 6.3 million barrels per day at the final plotted point.
- the gap widened
- the difference between two values became greater
The gap between oil consumption and production widened as consumption climbed.

The line graph below compares production and consumption of oil in China from 1982 to 2006. Overall, it is clear that although the oil used in first eight years was stable, it showed a significant rise in next 15 years to outscale the level of oil production which present slight increase over the mentioned period. According to the plotted lines, production began at about 2 million barrels per day and climbed to roughly 3 million by 1975, then remained close to this level until 1985. It increased only gradually thereafter, ending at around 3.5 million barrels per day. In contrast, consumption started just below 2 million and changed very little up to 1985. It then rose sharply, passing production between 1985 and 1995, and continued to climb to approximately 6.3 million barrels per day at the final point. Thus, consumption was clearly higher than production at the end, with a gap of nearly 3 million barrels per day. One important issue is that the task description gives the period as 1982–2006, whereas the graph's horizontal labels appear to run from 1965 to 2010 and include 2010 twice. Therefore, the exact years for several plotted points cannot be reconciled confidently from this image.
