Ideas to explore

  • Highlight the main crossover: Japan leads in the earlier years, while China overtakes it between 2005 and 2010.
  • Contrast China’s steep late increase with Japan’s gradual decline.
  • Note that the smaller series do not follow one pattern: the US fluctuates, whereas India rises to a peak and then falls.

Suggested structure

  1. Paraphrase what the graph measures and give the years covered.
  2. Summarise the overall ranking change and the main trends without listing every figure.
  3. Compare Japan and the US, using starting points, changes and final values.
  4. Describe China and India together, emphasising China’s sharp late rise and India’s smaller peak and decline.

Band 9.0

The line graph gives information about the proportion of exports from Australia to four different countries: Japan, the USA, China, and India between 1990 and 2012. Overall, the figure for Australian exports to China and India saw upward trends, while there was a decline in exports to Japan and the USA during the period. It is evident that China became Australia's largest destination by 2010, whereas Japan led at the beginning.

In 1990, Japan accounted for approximately 26% of exports, far more than the USA at 11%; the corresponding figures for China and India were about 2% and 1%. Japan's share fell to 20% in 1995, then edged down to roughly 18% in 2000 and 2005 before settling at around 17% in 2010 and 2012. The US figure fluctuated, dropping to 8% in 1995, recovering to 11% in 2000, and then declining to 5% in 2010 before ending at 7%.

By contrast, China's share rose gradually to 5% in 2000 and 11% in 2005, then surged to 25% in 2010 and 28% in 2012. India's proportion remained low until 2000, climbed to 5% in 2005, peaked at 7% in 2010 and slipped back to 5% in the final year.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Make the crossover a direct comparison: state that China overtook Japan sometime between 2005 and 2010, supported by their plotted percentages.
2
Use trend verbs with the measured quantity as their subject: for example, say that a share “rose,” “fell,” or “fluctuated.”
3
Check each plotted value against the relevant year before writing; retain approximations such as “about” or “around” where the graph does not show exact labels.
