Ideas to explore

  • Highlight the main crossover: Japan leads in the earlier years, while China overtakes it between 2005 and 2010.
  • Contrast China’s steep late increase with Japan’s gradual decline.
  • Note that the smaller series do not follow one pattern: the US fluctuates, whereas India rises to a peak and then falls.

Suggested structure

  1. Paraphrase what the graph measures and give the years covered.
  2. Summarise the overall ranking change and the main trends without listing every figure.
  3. Compare Japan and the US, using starting points, changes and final values.
  4. Describe China and India together, emphasising China’s sharp late rise and India’s smaller peak and decline.

Band 7.0

The graph illustrates Australia’s export rates to four different destination countries – Japan, the US, China, and India – from 1990 to 2012. In 1990, Australia exported the most to Japan (26%). However, export to Japan saw a significant decline until the early 2000s. From 2000 to 2012, the numbers continued to slowly decline, staying at approximately 17% in 2010 and 2012.

Overall, China’s share rose dramatically to become the largest, while Japan’s fell. The US figure fluctuated, and India’s remained comparatively low throughout.

China accounted for only 2% of exports in 1990, increasing gradually to 5% in 2000 and 11% in 2005. It then climbed sharply, reaching 25% in 2010 and 28% in 2012. By contrast, the US started at 11%, fell to 8% in 1995, and returned to 11% in 2000. Its share then declined to 5% in 2010 before recovering to 7% at the end of the period. India had the smallest shares in the first years, at around 1%, but rose to 5% in 2005 and peaked at 7% in 2010. It subsequently fell to 5% in 2012.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Move the overall summary directly after the introductory sentence, highlighting China’s rise and Japan’s decline before giving country-by-country details.
2
Use “share” or “percentage” consistently for the vertical-axis values, and identify the country or figure rather than referring vaguely to “the numbers.”
3
Check that each comparison matches the plotted years: for example, note the US recovery from 5% in 2010 to 7% in 2012 and India’s fall from 7% to 5%.
