Ideas to explore

  • Highlight the main crossover: Japan leads in the earlier years, while China overtakes it between 2005 and 2010.
  • Contrast China’s steep late increase with Japan’s gradual decline.
  • Note that the smaller series do not follow one pattern: the US fluctuates, whereas India rises to a peak and then falls.

Suggested structure

  1. Paraphrase what the graph measures and give the years covered.
  2. Summarise the overall ranking change and the main trends without listing every figure.
  3. Compare Japan and the US, using starting points, changes and final values.
  4. Describe China and India together, emphasising China’s sharp late rise and India’s smaller peak and decline.

Band 7.0

The presented line graph demonstrates the proportions of products that are sent from Australia to 4 countries between 1990 and 2012. Overall, 4 countries are pointed out: Japan, the US, China, and India. Also, the disposition of exports to China has the most significant increase compared to other countries. Upon closer examination of the chart, Japan’s share was highest at approximately 26% in 1990, before declining to 20% in 1995 and 18% in 2000. It then remained close to 18% in 2005 and slipped slightly to about 17% by 2010, staying at that level in 2012. The proportion exported to the US fluctuated: it fell from about 11% in 1990 to 8% in 1995, rose to around 11% in 2000, and then decreased to 5% in 2010 before recovering to approximately 7% in 2012. By contrast, China’s figure climbed steadily from roughly 2% in 1990 to 5% in 2000, then rose sharply to 11% in 2005 and 25% in 2010. It finished at about 28%, the highest figure on the graph. India’s share remained near 1% until 1995, rose to 5% in 2005 and peaked at around 7% in 2010, before falling to 5% in 2012. Overall, China became Australia’s largest export destination among the four countries by the end of the period.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Make the introduction identify the data directly: Australian export percentages to Japan, the US, China and India from 1990 to 2012.
2
Keep the overview focused on the strongest contrasts: China’s steep rise to the highest final share and Japan’s decline from the highest starting point.
3
When reporting figures, use approximate language consistently and check that each comparison matches the plotted years, especially China overtaking Japan between 2005 and 2010.
