The line graph illustrates the proportion of exports from Australia to four different nations over a period of 22 years starting from 1990. Overall, the percentage of Australian exports to China and India increased, while this rate to US and Japan decreased over the period. The figure for the proportion of Australian goods exported to China rose from about 2% in 1990 to approximately 28% in 2012, making it the largest destination at the end. Japan was the leading market initially, at roughly 26%, but its share fell to around 17% by 2010 and remained stable in 2012.
China's growth was modest until 2000, when it reached about 5%, before accelerating to 11% in 2005 and 25% in 2010. India's share was much lower: it stayed close to 1% until 1995, then climbed to 5% in 2005 and peaked at around 7% in 2010 before slipping to 5% in 2012. The US figure fluctuated, falling from about 11% in 1990 to 8% in 1995, recovering to 11% in 2000, and then declining to 5% in 2010 before a small rise to 7% in 2012.
