Ideas to explore

  • Compare the largest category in each direction: aircraft parts are $72 million from the US to Vietnam, while coffee is $23 million from Vietnam to the US.
  • Highlight the gap between the leading and smaller categories: US exports include other goods at $35 million and machinery at $30.5 million, while Vietnam’s garments and other exports are both $2 million.
  • Point out close values where they help summarise the data: Vietnam’s seafood ($4.4 million) and rice ($4.3 million) are almost equal.

Suggested structure

  1. Paraphrase what the charts compare and state that values are in millions of dollars.
  2. Give an overview naming the leading category in each direction and any notable tie or overall contrast.
  3. Describe US-to-Vietnam exports from the largest value to the smallest.
  4. Describe Vietnam-to-US exports in descending order, grouping the close seafood and rice figures and the tied lowest figures.

Band 4.0

The given chart depicts the amount of exports over two particular countries US and Vietnam. Overall, it can be seen that Vietnam exports a large amount of food items, among them coffee, fruit and vagetables acquired the the highest portion. Whereas, US mainly exports machinery and other items, where aircraft parts holded the highest amount. Looking first at Vietnam's exports to the US, coffee is the biggest category, at $23 million, while fruit and vegetables are worth $16 million. The remaining products are much smaller: seafood accounts for $4.4 million and rice for $4.3 million. Garments and other goods are the smallest categories, with $2 million each.

For exports in the opposite direction, aircraft parts dominate at $72 million. This figure is more than twice the value of the next category, other products, which stands at $35 million. Machinery also represents a substantial amount, at $30.5 million, followed by fertiliser at $16.5 million and cotton at $12 million. Cars make up the smallest share of US exports to Vietnam, at $6 million.

Overall, the charts show different leading products: coffee for Vietnam and aircraft parts for the US. US exports are also led by one much larger category, whereas Vietnam's second-largest category is closer in value to coffee.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Make the overview match the chart: name coffee ($23 million) and aircraft parts ($72 million) as the leading categories before describing other products.
2
Group the details by export direction and include the smaller categories with their exact figures, such as seafood ($4.4 million) and cars ($6 million).
3
After drafting, check every sentence for a clear subject and verb, then proofread chart terms and spelling, especially “vegetables” and “fertiliser.”
