Ideas to explore

  • Compare the largest category in each direction: aircraft parts are $72 million from the US to Vietnam, while coffee is $23 million from Vietnam to the US.
  • Highlight the gap between the leading and smaller categories: US exports include other goods at $35 million and machinery at $30.5 million, while Vietnam’s garments and other exports are both $2 million.
  • Point out close values where they help summarise the data: Vietnam’s seafood ($4.4 million) and rice ($4.3 million) are almost equal.

Suggested structure

  1. Paraphrase what the charts compare and state that values are in millions of dollars.
  2. Give an overview naming the leading category in each direction and any notable tie or overall contrast.
  3. Describe US-to-Vietnam exports from the largest value to the smallest.
  4. Describe Vietnam-to-US exports in descending order, grouping the close seafood and rice figures and the tied lowest figures.

Band 5.0

The chart graphs above compare correlations between exports of the US and Vietnam. All measures are considered in million dollars. Overall, the majority of exports from Vietnam to the United States is represented by coffee, whereas in vice versa correlation, aircraft parts has the considerable shares. According to the relation of Vietnam’sexportst to the USA’s exports, the largest category was coffee, at $23 million, while fruit and vegetables accounted for $16 million. Seafood and rice were similar, at $4.4 million and $4.3 million respectively; garments and other goods each stood at $2 million. In contrast, US exports to Vietnam were led by aircraft parts, at $72 million. The next largest categories were other goods ($35 million) and machinery ($30.5 million), followed by fertiliser at $16.5 million. Cotton and cars were the smallest categories, at $12 million and $6 million respectively. Overall, the listed US-to-Vietnam exports totalled $172 million, compared with $51.7 million for Vietnam-to-US exports. This means the total shown in the US-to-Vietnam chart was over three times the reverse-direction total, and the leading products were different in each direction.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Replace the opening with a direct description of the two directions of trade, and state that the charts give values in millions of dollars.
2
Write one overview comparing the leading categories and totals; say “largest category,” not “majority,” when a category is below half of the total.
3
Group the details by export direction, and proofread for plural forms, verb agreement, and accurate use of “million(s) of dollars.”
