Ideas to explore

  • Compare the largest category in each direction: aircraft parts are $72 million from the US to Vietnam, while coffee is $23 million from Vietnam to the US.
  • Highlight the gap between the leading and smaller categories: US exports include other goods at $35 million and machinery at $30.5 million, while Vietnam’s garments and other exports are both $2 million.
  • Point out close values where they help summarise the data: Vietnam’s seafood ($4.4 million) and rice ($4.3 million) are almost equal.

Suggested structure

  1. Paraphrase what the charts compare and state that values are in millions of dollars.
  2. Give an overview naming the leading category in each direction and any notable tie or overall contrast.
  3. Describe US-to-Vietnam exports from the largest value to the smallest.
  4. Describe Vietnam-to-US exports in descending order, grouping the close seafood and rice figures and the tied lowest figures.

Band 6.0

This pie chart illustrates the overseas trading distribution between the US and Vietnam, in millions, on different export items such as aircraft parts and coffee. Overall, the exports from US to Vietnam costs substantially more than that of Vietnamese items of export, with Aircraft parts an machinery taking the top spot for items exporting into Vietnam. The charts show that US exports are led by aircraft parts, at $72 million, followed by other goods ($35 million) and machinery ($30.5 million). Fertiliser accounts for $16.5 million, while cotton and cars are lower, at $12 million and $6 million respectively.

In the opposite direction, coffee is the largest Vietnamese export to the US, worth $23 million. Fruit and vegetables rank second at $16 million. The remaining categories are much smaller: seafood and rice bring in $4.4 million and $4.3 million, while garments and other goods are each valued at $2 million.

Comparing the two charts, the US sends substantially more in exports to Vietnam across the categories shown. Aircraft parts alone exceed the value of any Vietnamese export category, while coffee is the only Vietnamese item above $10 million apart from fruit and vegetables. Both charts include a small 'other' category, but its value is much higher for US exports, at $35 million compared with $2 million.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Replace the opening with a precise introduction that identifies two pie charts and says they compare export values in millions of dollars.
2
Write a two-part overview: identify aircraft parts and coffee as the leading categories, then state that US exports to Vietnam are higher across the charted categories.
3
Before submitting, check that every figure is attached to the correct direction of trade and correct agreement errors such as “exports … costs.”
