Ideas to explore

  • Compare the largest category in each direction: aircraft parts are $72 million from the US to Vietnam, while coffee is $23 million from Vietnam to the US.
  • Highlight the gap between the leading and smaller categories: US exports include other goods at $35 million and machinery at $30.5 million, while Vietnam’s garments and other exports are both $2 million.
  • Point out close values where they help summarise the data: Vietnam’s seafood ($4.4 million) and rice ($4.3 million) are almost equal.

Suggested structure

  1. Paraphrase what the charts compare and state that values are in millions of dollars.
  2. Give an overview naming the leading category in each direction and any notable tie or overall contrast.
  3. Describe US-to-Vietnam exports from the largest value to the smallest.
  4. Describe Vietnam-to-US exports in descending order, grouping the close seafood and rice figures and the tied lowest figures.

Band 5.0

The given pie chart compares exports in the middle of US and Vietnam. Overall, technologies are being exported to Vietnam, whereas food and products are exported from Vietnam. However, income is low in Vietnam, while only Aircraft parts export income in US is more than all of the Vietnam. In US, Aircraft parts are mostly the largest item, at $72 million. The other exports from the US to Vietnam were other products, worth $35 million, and machinery, at $30.5 million. Fertiliser made up $16.5 million, while cotton and cars were much lower, at $12 million and $6 million respectively.

For exports from Vietnam to the US, coffee was the biggest category, at $23 million. Fruit and vegetables were second, with $16 million. Seafood accounted for $4.4 million, slightly more than rice, at $4.3 million. Garments and other items were the smallest groups, each at $2 million.

Overall, the US exported several high-value goods to Vietnam, especially aircraft parts, while Vietnam's exports were led by coffee and food products. Aircraft parts alone were worth more than all categories shown for Vietnam's exports combined.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Write the overview after identifying the chart directions: Vietnam exports to the US on the left, and US exports to Vietnam on the right.
2
Select the dominant categories and comparisons: aircraft parts lead US exports, coffee leads Vietnamese exports, and aircraft parts exceed Vietnam's combined listed categories.
3
Check every category name and figure against the chart, then proofread articles and prepositions in phrases such as “the US” and “exports between.”
