Ideas to explore

  • Compare the largest category in each direction: aircraft parts are $72 million from the US to Vietnam, while coffee is $23 million from Vietnam to the US.
  • Highlight the gap between the leading and smaller categories: US exports include other goods at $35 million and machinery at $30.5 million, while Vietnam’s garments and other exports are both $2 million.
  • Point out close values where they help summarise the data: Vietnam’s seafood ($4.4 million) and rice ($4.3 million) are almost equal.

Suggested structure

  1. Paraphrase what the charts compare and state that values are in millions of dollars.
  2. Give an overview naming the leading category in each direction and any notable tie or overall contrast.
  3. Describe US-to-Vietnam exports from the largest value to the smallest.
  4. Describe Vietnam-to-US exports in descending order, grouping the close seafood and rice figures and the tied lowest figures.

Band 6.0

The pie chart illustrates the exports between the US and Vietnam, measured in millions of dollars. The data is categorized into six different segments in each country, revealing a significant difference in their export profile. Overall, the US exports more to Vietnam than Vietnam does to US. The US primarily exports Aircraft Parts, which values 72 million dollars. This is the largest figure in the chart and represents a substantial share of US exports. Other goods are worth $35 million, followed by machinery at $30.5 million. Fertiliser accounts for $16.5 million, while cotton and cars are lower, at $12 million and $6 million respectively.

By comparison, Vietnam's main export to the US is coffee, worth $23 million. Fruit and vegetables form the second-largest category, at $16 million. The remaining exports are much smaller: seafood is valued at $4.4 million and rice at $4.3 million, while garments and other goods are both worth $2 million. Overall, the US total is about $172 million, compared with approximately $51.7 million from Vietnam, so the former is more than three times as high. Aircraft parts alone are also worth more than any single Vietnamese export category.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Make the overview more informative by naming aircraft parts as the US’s leading export and coffee as Vietnam’s leading export.
2
Group the figures by direction and compare the dominant categories before reporting the smaller ones.
3
After drafting, check each country reference for the correct article and use a concise form such as “valued at $72 million” for figures.
