Ideas to explore

  • Parents shape social values through repeated everyday examples and guidance tailored to a child’s behaviour.
  • Schools let children practise cooperation, conflict resolution and respect among peers with different perspectives.
  • A balanced argument can assign parents the primary role while explaining how schools reinforce and extend lessons from home.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the debate and state your position clearly.
  2. Explain the case for parents, supported by a specific example of modelling or guidance.
  3. Explain what schools contribute through peer interaction and structured learning.
  4. Give your judgement on which role is primary and why.
  5. Conclude by showing how cooperation between families and schools benefits children.

Band 4.0

It’s generally believed that behaving in community ought to be taught within the family borders. Nevertheless, a number of people are convinced that children are being taught in school more effectively. I agree with both opinions to a certain extent due to the efficiency of parents’ words and elaborating self-restraint amidst students. The most obvious argument for teaching at home is that children see their parents every day. They can learn respect from these examples before they begin school.

Parents are important because children spend much time with them. They watch how their mother or father behaves and often copy this behaviour. For example, when a parent shares something or says sorry after a mistake, the child can learn to do the same. Parents can also explain why it is wrong to hurt another person. These lessons can start before children go to school.

School also has an important role. Children meet classmates from different families and need to learn how to work together. In a group activity, they must listen to others and share the work. Teachers can explain the rules and help children when they have a disagreement. This shows them how to behave with people who are not members of their own family.

I think both parents and schools should help. A teacher's lesson about respect will not be useful if a child sees adults behaving badly at home. In the same way, parents cannot give every experience that a classroom provides. They should talk to the teachers if a child has a problem, so the child receives a clear message from both places.

Parents should begin teaching good behaviour early, and schools should develop it through practice with other children. The aim is not only to follow rules but also to understand how actions affect other people.

In conclusion, children can learn important social lessons at home and at school. Parents provide daily examples, while teachers give opportunities to cooperate in a wider group. I believe these two kinds of teaching work best together.
