Ideas to explore

  • Physical education can support students’ health and give them a way to manage the stress of academic demands.
  • Cookery teaches practical independence and helps students make informed choices about food.
  • Limited school time supports careful curriculum planning, but does not necessarily justify removing non-academic subjects altogether.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the pressure to succeed academically and state clearly whether you agree with removing non-academic subjects.
  2. Explain one benefit of physical education and connect it to students’ wellbeing or development.
  3. Explain one practical benefit of cookery and why it matters beyond the classroom.
  4. Acknowledge limited teaching time and propose balancing subjects instead of eliminating them.
  5. Restate your position and briefly summarise why a broad curriculum is valuable.

Band 4.0

It has been widely known that more and more youngsters, in the present day, are thriving for the success in terms of their careers or academically, however, some teachers assert that some mandatory school subjects better be taken, especially the ones specialized for cookery and physical education. I fundamentally align with the given viewpoint inasmuch as I think these subjects should be removed from the school syllabus, so students can spend more time on academic work. Firstly, young people have many subjects to study and some of them have important exams. If they also have to attend cookery and physical education lessons, they may become tired and have less time to study subjects like maths and science. This can make them not achieve their goals in the future. Therefore, school should give more lessons to academic subjects which help students to enter university or find a good career.

Moreover, not every student enjoy these non-academic subjects. Some children are not good at sport, while others do not like cooking. Making all students study these subjects can make them feel bored and lose interest in school. They should have a choice to use their free time for the subjects that they are more interested in. This may help them to study better and get good results.

On the other hand, cookery and physical education are useful for normal life. People need to know how to prepare food and exercise is important for health. However, these things can be learnt at home or in optional activities after school. They do not need to be compulsory subjects for every student.

In conclusion, I agree that cookery and physical education should be removed as required subjects. Academic study is more important for students future, and children can learn these practical skills in other ways.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
State your position in a direct sentence, then use the same position consistently: for example, argue that the subjects should not be compulsory, rather than implying that they have no value.
2
Develop each reason with a clear chain: claim, explanation, and a relevant example. For instance, explain how an extra lesson affects study time instead of jumping directly to future outcomes.
3
After drafting, check subject–verb agreement, possessive apostrophes, and sentence boundaries; pay particular attention to “every student,” “students’ futures,” and the opening sentence.
