Part 1 · Band 6

Do you prefer tea or coffee?

Source-reported band score · 33 words

Sample answer

Actually, I prefer tea to coffee because coffee contains a lot of caffeine that can make it hard for me to fall asleep. But tea has antioxidants, so I think tea is better.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The ideas follow a clear sequence: you state your preference, explain the coffee-related reason, then add a positive point about tea. The final “so” connects that point to your conclusion. Because this is text only, fluency cannot be scored. Practise speaking this answer in 20 seconds, then repeat it in 15 seconds while keeping both reasons clear.

Lexical Resource

Your vocabulary is relevant and understandable: “caffeine,” “fall asleep,” and “antioxidants” make the reason specific rather than relying only on “I like tea.” The wording is appropriately conversational. “Tea” is repeated several times, though, and “tea is better” could be more clearly framed as your personal preference. You could vary one repetition with “it” or say “the better choice for me.”

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

The answer uses accurate connected clauses, including “because coffee contains…” and “that can make it hard…,” followed by a contrast with “But.” These structures clearly express a reason and a counterpoint. There is no clear grammatical error to correct. For a slightly smoother spoken response, join the last point to your conclusion with “overall” and avoid repeating “tea” in the same sentence.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation cannot be assessed from text, so this is not a rating of a recording. For practice, mark the main stress in “caffeine” and “antioxidants,” then group the answer into thought units: “I prefer tea to coffee” / “because coffee contains a lot of caffeine” / “that can make it hard for me to fall asleep.” Record yourself reading it, check that each phrase is easy to follow, and practise the two target words. This guide is not an assessment of a recording.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Keep the preference and reason together in one clear opening: “I prefer tea because…”
  • Replace one repeated “tea” with “it” or “this drink” where the reference remains clear.
  • Practise a 15–20-second version with three beats: preference, coffee-related reason, and tea-related point.
