Part 1 · Band 6

Do you prefer tea or coffee?

Source-reported band score · 47 words

Sample answer

It depends on my mood. When I'm really tired, I prefer drinking black coffee or coffee with milk over tea. However, my family and I usually drink green tea with lunch or dinner because it's much healthier than other drinks. Plus, it helps relieve stress and anxiety.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

Because this is text-only, spoken fluency cannot be assessed, so the band is null. On the page, the ideas progress clearly: you qualify your preference by mood, give the tiredness exception, then contrast it with your family’s usual mealtime choice and its benefits. To practise developing this naturally, give yourself 30 seconds to answer aloud using this sequence, then repeat in 20 seconds while keeping the same key points.

Lexical Resource

Relevant, natural choices such as “really tired,” “healthier,” and “relieve stress and anxiety” make your preference and reasons clear. “Prefer … over” also expresses comparison appropriately. The range is adequate but stays with familiar words, and “other drinks” is broad rather than specific. As an optional next step, use a more precise comparison such as “caffeinated drinks” only if that is what you mean; otherwise, your current wording is clear.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Your grammar is generally accurate: “When I'm really tired” introduces a clear time clause, and “healthier than other drinks” uses a correct comparative. You also connect ideas with “because” and “However.” Most sentences use straightforward patterns, so there is limited variety in complex structures. For a small extension, try one accurate contrast with “Although,” while keeping the answer conversational and concise.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation cannot be rated from text, so the band is null; this practice guide is not an assessment of a recording. Practise the word stress in “coffee” (first syllable), “healthier” (first syllable), and “anxiety” (second syllable). Group the answer into thought units, such as “When I'm really tired / … over tea” and “with lunch or dinner / because …”. Record a take, check that key words are clear, and compare it with a second take.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Practise a 20–30 second spoken response that keeps your current sequence: mood, coffee preference when tired, then green tea with meals.
  • Make the pronoun reference in the final sentence explicit by naming green tea, so the listener can immediately identify what “it” refers to.
  • If you want more lexical precision, replace “other drinks” with a specific comparison only when it accurately reflects what you mean.
