Part 1 · Band 5

What do you do in your free time?

Source-reported band score · 37 words

Sample answer

In my leisure time, I generally spend by watching some reels or by listening to the music which are more popular in the recent days. And very often, I go outside to have dinner with my friends.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The answer moves from activities done alone (“watching some reels” and listening to music) to a social activity, dinner with friends, so the ideas are easy to follow. The second point is added with “And very often,” but there is little development of either activity. For practice, speak for 30 seconds using this same sequence and add one truthful detail about each activity; fluency cannot be assessed from text alone.

Lexical Resource

The response uses relevant vocabulary such as “leisure time,” “reels,” and “have dinner with my friends,” and the meaning is generally clear. Some combinations are less natural, especially “spend by watching” and “go outside to have dinner.” Prefer common collocations such as “spend my free time watching,” “listen to music,” and “go out for dinner.” Practise these as complete phrases rather than translating word by word.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

You communicate with two clear clauses, but “the music which are” has an agreement error: “music” is uncountable and takes “is.” “I generally spend by watching” also needs a more natural verb pattern, such as “I generally spend my time watching.” The basic sentence structure is understandable; next, check subject–verb agreement and practise the pattern “spend time + -ing.”

Pronunciation

This practice guide is not an assessment of a recording. Practise the word stress in “LEIsure time,” “POPular,” and “DINner,” then read the answer in thought groups: “In my leisure time, I generally spend…” / “And very often, I go outside…” Record yourself twice and check whether the stressed words are clear and each group is easy to understand; no claim about your actual pronunciation can be made from text.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Practise the collocation “spend my free time + -ing” and use it to introduce an activity.
  • Check agreement in relative clauses: identify the noun before “which” and choose a matching verb, as in “music that is.”
  • Give one brief, truthful detail about each activity to develop the answer while keeping it relevant to the question.
