Part 1 · Band 4

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Source-reported band score · 44 words

Sample answer

After my school lesson, I have an extra lesson at the underkids learning center in Japan's city, and in fact, I have no free time. I have no extra time for anything, so in a week, I spend my valuable time to the end.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The answer moves from the after-school lesson to the lack of free time, using “so” to connect the schedule with its consequence. However, the final idea, “I spend my valuable time to the end,” is difficult to follow and does not clearly develop the response to what you enjoy doing. Practise speaking for 30 seconds: state your situation, explain its effect, then add one brief concluding sentence while keeping the same facts.

Lexical Resource

Phrases such as “extra lesson” and “no free time” communicate the main situation clearly. However, “in Japan's city” is not a natural way to describe the location, and “spend my valuable time to the end” is unclear in English. Practise useful collocations for schedules, such as “attend an extra lesson” and “have little time for other activities,” then use them in a short answer about your routine.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

The answer uses a longer sentence with a cause-and-effect link in “I have no extra time for anything, so…,” showing an attempt to connect ideas. The phrase “in Japan's city” has an awkward possessive construction, and “spend my valuable time to the end” does not form a clear grammatical meaning. Practise building short sentences with “because” or “so,” and check that each verb phrase expresses a complete, clear idea.

Pronunciation

This is a practice guide, not an assessment of a recording; pronunciation cannot be judged from text alone. Practise the word stress in “extra lesson” (EX-tra LES-son), “free time” (FREE time), and “valuable time” (VAL-u-a-ble time). Read the answer in thought groups, pausing briefly after “Japan's city” and “anything.” Record yourself, then check whether each phrase is easy to understand and the key words are stressed.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Answer the question directly by saying whether your schedule leaves you time to enjoy activities; keep your stated lack of free time as the central point.
  • Replace “Japan's city” with “a city in Japan,” and use a clear collocation such as “attend an extra lesson.”
  • Practise a three-sentence version aloud: describe the lesson, explain how it affects your free time, and finish with a clear summary.

Ideas to explore

  • Explain how an extra lesson after school affects the amount of free time you have.
  • Describe whether your schedule leaves time for hobbies or other activities, without adding activities you do not actually do.
  • Conclude by summarising how full your routine is at the moment.

Suggested structure

  1. Begin with the after-school lesson and where it takes place.
  2. Explain that attending it limits your free time.
  3. Clarify whether you have time for other activities.
  4. End with a brief summary of your current routine.
