Part 1 · Band 4

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Source-reported band score · 51 words

Sample answer

I've been feeling like it's in my body and it's really enjoyable for me. Instead of that, I love you. In my free time, I make some extraordinary wishes for my family. This free time is long, and I plan to go shopping with my friends and spend time with them.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The answer includes several relevant points—“wishes for my family” and shopping with friends—but the ideas do not yet form a clear sequence. “Instead of that” signals a contrast, although “I love you” does not explain what it contrasts with, and the opening is difficult to follow. Practise a 30-second response in this order: name one activity, give a reason, then add another activity and who you do it with.

Lexical Resource

There is some topic vocabulary in “go shopping with my friends” and “spend time with them,” which clearly communicates social activities. However, “extraordinary wishes” and “This free time is long” are unusual combinations in this context, while “it” in the opening has no clear reference. Next, practise a few natural phrases for leisure activities and explain what each activity involves; use precise words rather than relying on unclear descriptions.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

The answer shows some control of basic sentence structures, including “I plan to go shopping” and the infinitive phrase “to go shopping.” However, the opening—“I've been feeling like it's in my body”—is difficult to interpret, and the connection between sentences is unclear. Practise building short, complete sentences with a clear subject and meaning, then join related ideas with “also” or “because” only when the relationship is clear.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation cannot be assessed from a written answer, so this is not a judgement of a recording or of how you sound. For practice, mark the main stress in “free time,” “go shopping,” and “my family,” and group the answer into short thought groups, such as “In my free time / I plan to go shopping / with my friends.” Record yourself reading it, then check whether each key phrase is easy to understand and stressed clearly.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Start with a direct answer, such as “I enjoy spending time with my friends,” before adding other activities.
  • Replace unclear references such as “it” with the specific feeling or activity you mean.
  • Practise a 30-second answer with one activity, a reason, and a second activity; listen back and check that each point connects clearly.

Ideas to explore

  • Explain how an extra lesson after school affects the amount of free time you have.
  • Describe whether your schedule leaves time for hobbies or other activities, without adding activities you do not actually do.
  • Conclude by summarising how full your routine is at the moment.

Suggested structure

  1. Begin with the after-school lesson and where it takes place.
  2. Explain that attending it limits your free time.
  3. Clarify whether you have time for other activities.
  4. End with a brief summary of your current routine.
