Part 1 · Band 7

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Sample answer

Well, I am the kind of person who likes a lot of different things. I think I really like to play soccer, maybe because it's an opportunity to see my friends and catch up with them. I really love to watch movies at home because we have a lot of streaming services that we can access anytime. This makes it easy to find something entertaining to watch, whether it's a new release or an old classic. I also enjoy cooking, especially trying out new recipes from different cuisines. It’s a fun way to explore cultures and flavors without leaving home. Additionally, I like to read books, particularly fiction. Getting lost in a good story allows me to escape reality for a while and stimulates my imagination. I often visit the local library to find new authors or genres that I haven't explored yet. On weekends, I sometimes go hiking in the nearby hills. Being in nature is refreshing and gives me a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Overall, my free time is filled with activities that allow me to relax, learn, and connect with others, which I find very fulfilling.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

Your ideas follow a clear sequence: you introduce several hobbies, explain why you enjoy soccer and movies, then add cooking, reading, and hiking before summarising what these activities offer. For a live Part 1 response, that much detail may be difficult to fit comfortably. Practise a 45-second version using this answer: name three activities, give one reason for each, and finish with your overall preference. This is an analysis of the written sequence, not a fluency score.

Lexical Resource

The answer uses relevant, varied vocabulary, including “different cuisines,” “escape reality,” and “hustle and bustle,” to describe activities and their benefits. Phrases such as “a lot” and “really” recur, so the wording could be more concise and varied. As a refinement, replace one repeated intensifier with a precise description of what makes an activity enjoyable, while keeping the clear, conversational tone.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

You use accurate simple and complex forms, such as “I really love to watch movies at home because…” and the clause “whether it's a new release or an old classic.” The relative clause “which I haven't explored yet” is also handled clearly. There is no major grammatical error to correct; an optional next step is to vary sentence openings so that several paragraphs do not begin with “I” or “Additionally.”

Pronunciation

This text-only response cannot be used to assess your pronunciation. As a practice guide, mark the main stress in “streaming services,” “different cuisines,” and “local library,” then group the answer into short thought groups at the commas and full stops. Record yourself reading those phrases in context, replay the recording, and check whether each key word is easy to hear. This guide is not an assessment of a recording.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • For a more conversational Part 1 response, practise a 40–50-second version that focuses on soccer, cooking, and hiking, with one personal reason for each.
  • Replace one or two uses of “really” or “a lot” with a specific detail, such as what you enjoy about a recipe or a story.
  • Record a practice answer and check that your examples remain easy to follow when you use linking words such as “also” and “on weekends.”
