Part 1 · Band 9

What do you like to do in your free time?

Source-reported band score · 53 words

Sample answer

Whenever I have free time, I put on some nice, soothing music while practicing yoga and meditation. Honestly, I find it incredibly relaxing, and I think it's the perfect way to unwind after a hectic day. While yoga helps me stay physically active and flexible, meditation clears my mind and enhances my focus.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The answer develops in a clear sequence: it names the activity, describes its relaxing effect, then explains separate benefits of yoga and meditation. This gives the response a satisfying finish rather than a list of activities. Fluency cannot be judged from text alone. Practise speaking this answer for 30 seconds, then repeat it in 25 seconds while keeping the activity and both benefits clear.

Lexical Resource

Phrases such as “soothing music,” “unwind after a hectic day” and “stay physically active and flexible” are natural and specific to the topic. The vocabulary communicates both mood and benefits without sounding forced. The wording is mostly familiar rather than especially varied; as an optional refinement, try replacing one broad phrase, such as “incredibly relaxing,” with a more personal description that remains true for you.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

The response uses accurate, varied structures, including the contrast in “While yoga helps me…” and the coordinated verbs in “clears my mind and enhances my focus.” The sentences are complete and easy to follow, with no clear grammatical errors. For further flexibility, practise expressing the same ideas once with a shorter opening clause and once with a reason clause, while keeping the meaning unchanged.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation cannot be assessed from this text, and this practice guide is not an assessment of a recording. Practise word stress in “meditation” and “physically,” then group the answer into thought groups: “Whenever I have free time / I put on some nice, soothing music / while practicing yoga and meditation.” Record yourself, check that each group is easy to follow, and compare the recording with your written text.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Practise delivering the answer in 25–30 seconds, keeping the activity, relaxing effect and two benefits in that order.
  • Record two versions: one using the current wording and one with a shorter opening; compare which sounds more direct while preserving your meaning.
  • Mark the thought groups in the pronunciation guide, then check your recording against the text to see whether each idea is clearly separated.

Ideas to explore

  • Name reading as the free-time activity you enjoy.
  • Mention the library and the Peace Hotel as places where you used to read.
  • Include the detail that you read in class three times, expressed clearly.

Suggested structure

  1. Answer the free-time question directly with the activity.
  2. Add a sentence about when or where you used to read.
  3. Give the class-reading detail in a separate, clear sentence.
  4. Check that each detail connects to reading rather than introducing a new question.
