Part 1 · Band 8

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

Source-reported band score · 196 words

Sample answer

My musical taste changes pretty rapidly all the time, but at the moment, I enjoy listening to soft, girly pop music with lyrics about love and girlhood. For instance, Sabrina Carpenter is one of my favorite singers currently. You can hear her from every corner in shopping malls or cafes on the radio. She's really popular among teenagers and young adults, which is probably why I connect with her music so much. Her songs often explore themes of friendship, self-discovery, and romance, making them relatable to my experiences. In addition to Sabrina Carpenter, I also enjoy artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish, who bring a unique blend of pop and emotional depth to their music. Their lyrics often resonate with my feelings and thoughts, which is why I find myself listening to them on repeat. Moreover, I appreciate the production quality of pop music today, with catchy melodies and vibrant beats that make it perfect for any occasion, whether I'm studying, hanging out with friends, or just relaxing at home. Overall, this genre provides a sense of comfort and joy, allowing me to escape into a world of melodies and emotions that I truly enjoy.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The answer develops in a clear sequence: you state your current preference, give Sabrina Carpenter as an example, explain your connection to her music, then mention other artists and the appeal of pop production. That progression is easy to follow, though the final two sections extend a response to a simple Part 1 question. Practise a 45-second version using this answer: give your preference, one artist-related reason, and one concluding detail.

Lexical Resource

You use relevant, varied language, including “self-discovery,” “emotional depth,” and “vibrant beats,” to describe both the music and your response to it. “Listening to them on repeat” is also a natural expression. A couple of phrases could be more concise or precise: “pretty rapidly all the time” repeats the idea of frequency, and “from every corner” is an unclear image here. Consider replacing them with direct, conversational wording.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

The answer shows good control of complex structures, including the relative clause “who bring a unique blend of pop and emotional depth” and the participle phrase “making them relatable to my experiences.” You also use a range of sentence openings and subordinate clauses accurately. Some sentences carry several ideas at once, especially the one beginning “Moreover”; splitting or shortening it could make this spoken response easier to follow without changing its meaning.

Pronunciation

This is text only, so pronunciation cannot be assessed; this practice guide is not an assessment of a recording. Practise the phrases “musical taste,” “self-discovery,” and “vibrant beats”: make the main stress clear in musical and discovery, and give beats a firm beat. Group the ideas as “I enjoy listening to soft pop / with lyrics about love and girlhood.” Record a practice run, then check whether each phrase is clear and the thought groups match the meaning.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • For this Part 1 question, practise answering in about 40–50 seconds: state your preference, explain why one artist appeals to you, and add one detail about when you listen.
  • Replace repeated emphasis such as “pretty rapidly all the time” with one clear expression, for example “quite often.”
  • Read the answer aloud in thought groups and record a practice run; check that longer sentences, especially the one about production and occasions, are easy to follow.
