Band 8.0

The maps indicate the changes to Paradise Island in the past and in the present. Overall, the period observed many major changes to the island. From just being used for scientific research, the island developed into a modern resort complex with many recreational and commercial features being put up. In the past, the island consisted of a small scientific research station, a pier and a boat on the western side, with a beach just to the northwest. Several palm trees occupied the central area, while a natural spring and a group of rocks were located in the east. In the present, the research station and boat are no longer shown, and a cruise ship is positioned beside the pier. The beach remains, and swimming is now permitted there. A hotel complex and swimming pool have been added in the central-western area, replacing the former open space and palm trees. To the east, visitors can find an open restaurant, a BBQ area and a café. A cycle path leads towards a scenic lookout near the rocks, while the natural spring and rocks appear to remain. Thus, it has changed from a small research location into a resort offering accommodation, dining and leisure facilities.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Replace the overview’s “the period observed” construction with a sentence whose subject is the island, then summarise the shift from research use to tourism.
2
Organise the details by location: describe the western beach and pier, the central hotel and pool, and the eastern spring, dining facilities and lookout.
3
Use explicit comparison verbs—“remained,” “was removed,” and “was added”—and check that each verb matches what the maps actually show.
