Ideas to explore

  • Compare the rooms’ capacities, dimensions and weekly prices as the main overview features.
  • Describe what the rooms share, including their 6-metre width, bathroom position and kitchenette.
  • Contrast the furnishing: two beds, two desks and a central dining set in the larger room versus one bed and one desk in the single room.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the two plans and identify their occupants.
  2. Give an overview of the main contrasts in size, furnishing and rent.
  3. Compare the dimensions, including the shared width and different depths.
  4. Describe shared facilities and then the distinctive furniture in each room.
  5. Conclude with the relationship between capacity, space and weekly price.

Band 8.0

The given diagrams illustrate the layout of two different student rooms at an Australian university. Overall, the main differences between the two rooms are the price, the size, the features of each room, and how many people each room can accommodate. As can be seen, the first room is the larger, more expensive one, and the second room is designed for one student and costs less. Both rooms are 6 metres long, but the two-person room is 4 metres wide, compared with 2.5 metres for the single room. Accordingly, the larger room costs $350 per week, while the smaller one costs $200.

The overall arrangement is similar: in both plans, the bathroom is in the upper-left corner, the kitchenette is at the lower left, and the bed and study area are positioned along the right and upper sides. However, the two-person room contains two beds and two study desks, whereas the single room has one of each. The larger room also has a table with chairs in the centre, providing a shared eating or social area that is absent from the one-person plan. Both layouts show basic cooking facilities, including a stove and sink, as well as a microwave. In short, the single room retains the main private and kitchen facilities but has less floor space and fewer furnishings, which is reflected in its lower weekly rent.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Make the overview more selective: state the higher rent and larger size of the two-person room, then its greater capacity.
2
Group the measurements and prices in one comparison, using parallel phrasing for the 4-metre and 2.5-metre widths and the two weekly rents.
3
When describing facilities, distinguish what is shared by both plans from what appears only in the two-person room; describe visible furniture rather than guessing at its use.
