Ideas to explore

  • Email use is remarkably stable across the age groups, staying between 90% and 95%.
  • Downloading music and videos shows a clear age-related decline, from 52% among teenagers to 6% among people aged 70 and over.
  • Some activities have an age-group peak rather than a steady trend: gaming is highest in the 20s, while online shopping and searching for people peak in the 30s.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the table, its subject and the age groups.
  2. Give an overview of the most consistent pattern and the clearest age-related change.
  3. Compare email and gaming using their highest, lowest and contrasting age-group figures.
  4. Describe downloads, shopping and searching, grouping figures by trend or peak.
  5. Add the travel-reservation comparison using only values that can be matched confidently to their age groups.

Band 6.0

The given table provides data on the proportion of six different internet utilizations by age groups. Overall, it is evident that using e-mail was the most common internet activities in all age groups. In addition, online games are shown to be popular among people below 20s, whereas travel reservations and online shoppings are more desirable among many adults than online games. Looking at the figures, e-mail use remained high and varied little, ranging from 90% among teenagers and people in their 60s to 95% in the 50s. Games reached a peak of 88% in the 20s, then fell to 36% in the 30s and 25% in the 40s, before remaining between 27% and 29% in older groups. Downloading music and videos declined steadily with age, from 52% for teenagers to just 6% for those aged 70 and over. Travel reservations rose from 30% among teenagers to a high of 74% in the 30s, then remained between 58% and 65% in older groups. Online purchases were most common among people in their 30s, at 69%, and least common among teenagers, at 39%. Searching for people was relatively uncommon, ranging from 3% among teenagers to a peak of 33% in the 30s, with a figure of 31% for those aged 70 and over.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Replace the broad overview about what is “more desirable” with the clearest age-related peaks: games are highest in the 20s, travel reservations in the 30s, and online purchases in the 30s.
2
Check that each percentage is attached to the correct age group, especially the low game-use figure of 25% in the 40s and the 6% download figure for people aged 70 and over.
3
After drafting, check noun forms and agreement in the opening: use “internet activities,” “online shopping,” and a singular complement after “the most common.”
