Ideas to explore

  • Email use is remarkably stable across the age groups, staying between 90% and 95%.
  • Downloading music and videos shows a clear age-related decline, from 52% among teenagers to 6% among people aged 70 and over.
  • Some activities have an age-group peak rather than a steady trend: gaming is highest in the 20s, while online shopping and searching for people peak in the 30s.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the table, its subject and the age groups.
  2. Give an overview of the most consistent pattern and the clearest age-related change.
  3. Compare email and gaming using their highest, lowest and contrasting age-group figures.
  4. Describe downloads, shopping and searching, grouping figures by trend or peak.
  5. Add the travel-reservation comparison using only values that can be matched confidently to their age groups.

Band 7.0

The table presents data on six different internet activities by age group. Overall, some tasks which can be done by the internet are highly used by elderly people, and, on the contrary, by young people. However, there are some activities which are highly demanded by all age groups. As it can be seen from the table, e-mail is consistently the most popular activity, while online games and downloading media are more common among younger users. Shopping online and making travel reservations are also popular across most age groups, whereas searching for people attracts a smaller proportion.

E-mail use remains high in every group, ranging from 90% among teenagers and people in their 60s to a peak of 95% among those in their 50s. Online gaming drops sharply after the 20s, from 88% in that group to 20% among people in their 50s, then rises slightly to 29% in the oldest group. Downloading music and videos declines steadily from 52% of teenagers to just 6% of people aged 70 and over.

By contrast, travel reservations are most common among those in their 30s, at 74%, and remain at 51–65% in the other adult groups shown. Online purchasing peaks at 69% among people in their 30s, stays close to the mid-60s through the 60s, and falls to 40% among the over-70s. Searching for people is the least common activity overall, with figures between 3% and 33%.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Rewrite the overview in two clear trend groups: activities that are most popular among younger users, and activities that remain high or peak among middle-aged users.
2
Use precise percentage language, such as “accounted for 90%” or “was used by 90%,” instead of “highly used” or “highly demanded.”
3
Check every comparison against the table and name both the age group and the figure, especially when describing a peak or a decline.
