Part 1 · Band 7

Are you a student or do you work?

Sample answer

Well, I work. I've been working for many years. It's been nearly 2 decades now. I worked as an English instructor, assisting students in their language development. And knowing that, I also helped them to become better people by improving their value education as well as their personal development. I love being a teacher.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The answer develops in a clear sequence: it states that you work, gives your experience (“nearly 2 decades”), describes teaching students, and ends with “I love being a teacher.” The link “And knowing that” does not clearly show how the next idea follows. Since this is text only, spoken fluency cannot be assessed. Practise delivering this answer in 20 seconds, then repeat it in 15 seconds while keeping the same key points.

Lexical Resource

The response uses relevant teaching vocabulary, including “English instructor,” “language development,” and “personal development.” These expressions make your role and its value clear. However, “value education” is an awkward collocation, and “development” is repeated. Consider saying “education in values” and varying the wording—for example, “build their language skills” and “support their personal growth.”

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

You use both short sentences and a participle phrase in “assisting students in their language development,” which gives the answer some variety. Most sentence forms are understandable. The connection in “And knowing that” is unclear, though, and “by improving their value education” makes the relationship between your teaching and the students’ development difficult to follow. Use a direct connector and a clearer verb phrase.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation cannot be assessed from text, so this is a practice guide, not an assessment of a recording. Practise the word stress in “English instructor,” “nearly two decades,” and “personal development.” Read the answer in thought groups, pausing briefly after the duration and after the students’ language skills. Record one take, then check whether each phrase is easy to follow and the key words sound prominent.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Give a direct answer first, then connect your experience to it: for example, state your role and follow with how long you have worked.
  • Replace “And knowing that” with a clear transition such as “I also,” and use a precise verb to explain how you support students.
  • Practise this answer twice: once in 20 seconds and once in 15 seconds, keeping the job, duration, student support, and personal opinion.
