Part 1 · Band 8

What do you like to do at home?

Source-reported band score · 51 words

Sample answer

Actually, I love doing a variety of tasks at home, like baking for my lovely family and working in my small garden. It's the weekend, and I really enjoy cleaning my house whenever I am free. However, I must admit, I really hate doing ironing, which is today's task for me.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The answer develops in a clear sequence: enjoyable activities (“baking” and gardening), cleaning at the weekend, then a contrast with ironing as today’s task. This makes it relevant and easy to follow, though the list could feel more conversational with a brief reason or detail. Practise speaking it in 30 seconds, linking each activity with a short explanation while keeping the contrast about ironing.

Lexical Resource

The answer uses varied, relevant wording such as “working in my small garden” and “whenever I am free,” and “must admit” makes the contrast sound natural. Most vocabulary is familiar rather than especially varied, which is appropriate for this Part 1 question. As an optional refinement, replace “a variety of tasks” with a more conversational phrase such as “a range of things,” then add one precise detail about an activity.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

There is good control of sentence structures, including the time clause “whenever I am free” and the contrast introduced by “However.” The main grammar issue is “doing ironing”: standard usage is “doing the ironing.” The sentence beginning “It's the weekend” is understandable, though “At the weekend” would make the time reference flow more smoothly into the general statement. Review common activity phrases with do and go.

Pronunciation

This is not an assessment of a recording, so pronunciation cannot be rated from the text. For practice, stress the key words in “small garden,” “whenever I am free,” and “today’s task,” grouping each phrase as a unit rather than stressing every word equally. Record the answer twice, mark the stressed words, and check that each thought group is easy to understand. This guide is practice advice, not an assessment of your spoken performance.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Change “doing ironing” to “doing the ironing” and practise the full phrase aloud.
  • Add one short reason or detail about baking or gardening to make the answer more personal without becoming lengthy.
  • Use a clear contrast before the final point about ironing, then finish with the fact that it is today’s task.
