Part 1 · Band 6

What do you like to do at home?

Source-reported band score · 199 words

Sample answer

There are a lot of activities I enjoy doing at home. First, I clean my room and take care of my plants. Then, I might cook something or bake a sweet treat for my family. When I have free time, I do my homework, plan my schedule, and practice speaking. In the evening, I spend time with my family watching movies or playing board games. This is a great way to relax and bond with each other after a long day. Sometimes, we also enjoy having dinner together, where we can talk about our day and share stories. Another activity I like is reading books. I often lose myself in different stories, which helps me to escape reality for a while. I prefer fiction, especially fantasy, as it allows me to explore new worlds and ideas. In addition, I sometimes listen to music or play my guitar. Music is a big part of my life, and it helps me to unwind. I find that playing an instrument is a great way to express myself and relieve stress. Overall, my home is a place where I can be productive and enjoy my hobbies, making it a comfortable and enjoyable environment.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

Your answer develops in a clear sequence: chores and study, family activities, reading, then music, before closing with “my home is a place where I can be productive.” The details explain why you enjoy each activity, so the response feels complete, though several paragraph-style transitions make it longer than a typical Part 1 reply. Practise delivering this answer in 60 seconds, keeping one reason for each activity and a brief closing. Fluency cannot be assessed from text alone.

Lexical Resource

You use relevant, varied expressions such as “lose myself in different stories,” “explore new worlds,” and “unwind.” These make your hobbies and their effects clear, while “activities” and “great way” recur and sometimes sound general. To make the response more precise without forcing uncommon vocabulary, replace one repeated general phrase with a specific verb or description, such as saying what you enjoy about cooking or playing board games.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

The answer shows control of several structures, including the time clause “When I have free time,” the relative clause “which helps me to escape reality,” and coordinated lists. Most sentences are clear and accurate. The dinner sentence beginning “Sometimes, we also enjoy having dinner together, where…” is understandable, but “where” attaches a little loosely to the dinner activity. Try joining the actions directly with “and” for smoother spoken grammar.

Pronunciation

Text alone cannot show how you pronounce these words, so this is a practice guide, not an assessment of a recording. Mark the main stress in “board games,” “fantasy,” and “relieve stress,” then group the answer into thought groups at the commas and full stops. Record one 60-second delivery, check that each phrase is easy to understand, and compare your word stress with a dictionary audio model.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Practise a 60-second version: mention home activities, give one reason you enjoy them, and finish with a short summary.
  • Replace one repeated general phrase such as “a great way” with a specific benefit already in your answer, such as relaxing or expressing yourself.
  • Record yourself once and check the stress in “board games,” “fantasy,” and “relieve stress”; use pauses at the sentence boundaries to keep the ideas distinct.
