Part 1 · Band 8

What do you like to do at home?

Source-reported band score · 46 words

Sample answer

Well, it depends on whether I'm home alone or with my family. When I'm home alone, I like to surprise my family by cooking delicious meals. However, when I'm with my family, I prefer to communicate with them and find interesting topics that everyone can enjoy.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The ideas follow a clear contrast: “When I'm home alone” introduces cooking, while “when I'm with my family” introduces conversation. The answer then adds a reason for each preference, so it develops the response rather than merely listing activities. Text alone cannot show spoken fluency. Practise it in 20 seconds, then repeat in 15 seconds while keeping both situations and their reasons.

Lexical Resource

Phrases such as “surprise my family” and “interesting topics that everyone can enjoy” express the activities and their purpose clearly. The vocabulary is natural and appropriate, though “communicate with them” is somewhat formal for a casual question about home life, and “interesting topics” is broad. For a little more precision, replace one general phrase with a familiar example of a topic, without adding detail that is not true for you.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

The answer handles conditional contrasts accurately through “whether I'm home alone or with my family” and the parallel “When I'm…” clauses. It also combines ideas using “by cooking” and “that everyone can enjoy,” showing control beyond simple sentences. No clear grammatical error stands out in this short sample. As an optional refinement, vary the repeated “when” framing while retaining the contrast between the two situations.

Pronunciation

Text cannot establish how the answer was pronounced; this is a practice guide, not an assessment of a recording. Practise the word stress in “delicious meals” (de-LI-cious; MEALS) and “interesting topics” (IN-ter-est-ing; TOP-ics). Read in thought groups: “When I'm home alone / I like to surprise my family / by cooking delicious meals.” Record two readings, then check that each phrase is easy to understand and its key words are clear.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Keep the two-part contrast, but make the transition concise: state what you do alone, then what you do with your family.
  • Choose a more conversational verb such as “talk” instead of “communicate” when describing family conversation.
  • Practise a 15–20-second version aloud, keeping the reason for each activity and stressing the key words in each thought group.
