Part 1 · Band 7

What do you like to do at home?

Source-reported band score · 202 words

Sample answer

The time I spend at home is probably the most comfortable and relaxing. I wouldn't say I don't enjoy school, but at home, I can truly be myself. I can indulge in my own habits without interruption. For example, I love reading books at home, delving into my passion for coding, and working on personal projects. Reading allows me to escape into different worlds and explore various ideas, which is something I find incredibly enriching. I often lose track of time when I'm engrossed in a good novel or a fascinating non-fiction book. On the other hand, coding is another activity that keeps me engaged for hours. I enjoy creating small applications or games, and it gives me a sense of accomplishment when I see my ideas come to life on the screen. Additionally, I like to spend time with my family while watching movies or playing board games. These moments are precious as they strengthen our bond and create lasting memories. Cooking is also something I enjoy, as it allows me to experiment with different recipes and flavors. Overall, my home is a sanctuary where I can pursue my interests freely, connect with loved ones, and unwind after a long day.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The ideas develop in a clear sequence: you move from reading and coding to family activities and cooking, then conclude with “my home is a sanctuary.” That gives the answer a satisfying shape. However, the response is quite extended for Part 1, and some details could be compressed. Practise delivering it in 60 seconds, keeping one example for each main idea and finishing with the summary.

Lexical Resource

Phrases such as “lose track of time,” “a sense of accomplishment,” and “lasting memories” express your enjoyment naturally and precisely. The topic vocabulary also covers reading, coding, and family life well. One phrase, “indulge in my own habits,” is less idiomatic in this context and may sound as though the habits are indulgences. Consider using “pursue my interests” or “follow my own routines” for a more natural fit.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

You use a good range of structures, including the contrast in “I wouldn't say I don't enjoy school, but at home, I can truly be myself” and the relative clause “which is something I find incredibly enriching.” Most sentences are controlled and easy to follow. The opening, “The time I spend at home is probably the most comfortable and relaxing,” has an awkward subject–description match. Recast it around “spending time at home” to make the meaning clearer.

Pronunciation

No audio was provided, so this is not an assessment of your pronunciation or delivery. For practice, mark the main stress in “comfortable and relaxing” (COMF- and -LAX-), and in “a sense of accomplishment” (the main stress in accomplishment is on COM). Group the thought as “I enjoy creating small applications or games / and it gives me a sense of accomplishment.” Record it, then check whether the stressed words stand out and the phrase remains clear; this practice guide is not an assessment of a recording.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Replace the opening with a direct statement such as “I find spending time at home really relaxing” so the subject and description match clearly.
  • For a concise Part 1 response, group reading and coding as personal hobbies, then briefly mention family time and cooking rather than explaining every activity at length.
  • Practise a 60-second version and check that each activity has one clear detail, such as reading a novel, creating an app or game, or playing board games with your family.
