Part 1 · Band 6

What do you like to do at home?

Source-reported band score · 46 words

Sample answer

There are several things I like to do at home, which I really prefer. Like cooking meals, baking sweets, and listening to music and watching movies. I can really believe that this kind of activity can help me to avoid some really stressful and anxious situations.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The answer moves from a general introduction to a list of home activities and then to their emotional benefit, so the ideas have a clear basic sequence. However, “Like cooking meals…” reads as a fragment in writing, and the final sentence does not develop the examples further. Text alone cannot establish spoken fluency. Practise a 30-second response using one activity, a brief detail about it, and how it makes you feel; record and check that the ideas connect.

Lexical Resource

The answer uses relevant everyday vocabulary, including “cooking meals,” “baking sweets,” and “listening to music,” which directly addresses the question. “Stressful and anxious situations” also communicates the intended benefit. However, “really” is repeated, and “I can really believe” is an unnatural way to introduce an opinion. Try replacing the repeated intensifier with precise language such as “relaxing” or “help me unwind,” while keeping the examples personal and specific.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

The opening sentence uses a relative clause, and the final sentence attempts a more complex structure with “that” and “can help me to.” However, “Like cooking meals…” is a sentence fragment rather than a complete response, while “which I really prefer” is awkwardly attached to the opening idea. Make the list part of a full sentence—for example, “I like cooking, baking, listening to music, and watching movies”—then check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation cannot be assessed from this text, and this practice guide is not an assessment of a recording. Practise the word stress in “cooking meals” and “listening to music,” and group the final idea into thought groups: “These activities help me / avoid stressful situations.” Record yourself saying the answer, then listen back to check whether each phrase is easy to understand and whether the key words are clearly stressed.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Turn the activity list into a complete sentence with “I like…” rather than beginning a sentence with “Like.”
  • Replace “I can really believe” with “I believe” or “I find,” and use “really” only when it adds emphasis.
  • Add one brief personal detail about an activity, such as what you enjoy cooking or what kind of music you listen to, then explain how it helps you relax.
