Ideas to explore

  • Compare the sexes by age band: men have the higher rate only among 15–24-year-olds.
  • Describe the contrasting patterns: the male rate falls to a low among 35–44-year-olds before recovering, while the female rate rises to a plateau above 50% from ages 35 to 64.
  • Highlight the endpoint: the two rates are almost equal among people aged 65 and over.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the chart, population, measure, age groups, and year.
  2. Give an overview of the main gender contrast and the near-equal oldest-group figures.
  3. Describe the male figures across the age groups, noting the low and later recovery.
  4. Describe the female figures, noting the rise and peak, then compare the oldest group.

Band 9.0

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of Australian men and women who engaged in regular physical activity across various age groups in 2010. Overall, it is evident that a higher proportion of women participated in physical activity compared to men in most age categories. The only exception was the youngest age group (15-24 years), where men recorded the higher figure, at just over 50%, compared with approximately 48% for women. Among those aged 25–34, female participation was about 49%, while the male figure was roughly 42%. The gap widened further in the 35–44 group: around 52% of women exercised regularly, versus just under 40% of men.

Female rates then remained broadly stable, at approximately 53% for both 45–54 and 55–64-year-olds. By contrast, male participation increased gradually, from about 43% in the 45–54 bracket to 45% among 55–64-year-olds. In the oldest group, the figures converged, with around 47% of women and 46% of men active.

Overall, women’s participation was highest and notably consistent from ages 35 to 64, whereas the male figure fell from its peak among 15–24-year-olds before recovering with age. At age 65 and over, the two rates were almost equal.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Keep the overview to the two dominant patterns: women lead in every group except ages 15–24, and the rates are nearly equal among those aged 65 and over.
2
Use approximate figures consistently because the chart has no printed data labels; distinguish clear trends from small differences.
3
Remove repeated summary information at the end and use that space to compare the decline and recovery in men’s rates with women’s steadier middle-age figures.
