Ideas to explore

  • Compare the sexes by age band: men have the higher rate only among 15–24-year-olds.
  • Describe the contrasting patterns: the male rate falls to a low among 35–44-year-olds before recovering, while the female rate rises to a plateau above 50% from ages 35 to 64.
  • Highlight the endpoint: the two rates are almost equal among people aged 65 and over.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the chart, population, measure, age groups, and year.
  2. Give an overview of the main gender contrast and the near-equal oldest-group figures.
  3. Describe the male figures across the age groups, noting the low and later recovery.
  4. Describe the female figures, noting the rise and peak, then compare the oldest group.

Band 6.0

The bar chart compares the percentage of Australian males and females in different age groups from 15 to over 65 years old doing regular exercises in 2010. It’s clear that males did more regular physical activity than females at the young group of 15 to 24 years old. However at the following age groups, females were more active than males, apart from the oldest group, where the figures were almost equal. In general, women had higher participation rates in four of the six age groups, while men led only among people aged 15 to 24.

For men, the proportion was highest in the youngest group, at about 52%. It then fell to around 42% for those aged 25 to 34 and reached a low of approximately 39% among 35- to 44-year-olds. After this, the rate rose gradually, reaching about 43% for the 45-to-54 group and 45% for those aged 55 to 64. It finished at roughly 46% for men aged 65 and over.

By contrast, the female figure increased from approximately 48% in the youngest category to around 49% among 25- to 34-year-olds. It was about 52% for women aged 35 to 44 and peaked at roughly 53% in both the 45-to-54 and 55-to-64 groups. In the oldest category, it dropped to around 47%.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Write a one-sentence overview after the introduction that states the overall pattern and the near-equal figures for the oldest group.
2
Check each age band against the chart and report the approximate male and female percentages in a consistent order.
3
Proofread for natural chart collocations and small grammar details, especially “regular physical activity,” prepositions, and commas after introductory linkers.
