Ideas to explore

  • Compare the sexes by age band: men have the higher rate only among 15–24-year-olds.
  • Describe the contrasting patterns: the male rate falls to a low among 35–44-year-olds before recovering, while the female rate rises to a plateau above 50% from ages 35 to 64.
  • Highlight the endpoint: the two rates are almost equal among people aged 65 and over.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the chart, population, measure, age groups, and year.
  2. Give an overview of the main gender contrast and the near-equal oldest-group figures.
  3. Describe the male figures across the age groups, noting the low and later recovery.
  4. Describe the female figures, noting the rise and peak, then compare the oldest group.

Band 5.0

The bar charts illustrate the proportion of men and women of various age categories in Australia who participated in physical activity on a daily basis in the year 2010. In general, after mid-twenties, the percentage of male participants declined while the percentage of female participants increased moderately. For category 15 to 24, Men’s portion consists of about 53%, compared with approximately 48% for women. Among 25 to 34-year-olds, the female rate was around 49%, against 42% for men. The widest gap occurred in the 35 to 44 group: approximately 52% of women exercised regularly, whereas the male figure reached a low of about 39%. The female proportion then remained fairly stable, at roughly 53% in both the 45–54 and 55–64 age groups, before falling to around 47% among those aged 65 and over. By contrast, men's participation rose from about 43% in the 45–54 group to 45% in the 55–64 group and approximately 46% in the oldest group. Overall, women recorded higher participation rates than men in every group except the youngest, while rates for both sexes were closest among people aged 65 and over.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Revise the overview to capture both complete trends: men fall to their lowest point at 35–44 and then rise, while women peak around 45–64 before declining among those aged 65 and over.
2
Use the chart's wording, “regular physical activity,” rather than interpreting it as daily activity; keep all numerical descriptions approximate because the bars do not show exact labels.
3
Check each age-group phrase for natural grammar and consistent past tense, for example, “In the 15–24 age group, the male figure was about 53%.”
