Band 8.0

The charts provide information on the activities of UK graduate and postgraduate students who did not secure full-time employment after leaving college in 2008. From an overall perspective, the number of graduates who did not obtain a full-time job is ten times higher than that of postgraduates. However, the proportion of each destination among part-time and postgraduate students differed, although further study was the most common destination for both groups and voluntary work the least common.

For graduates, further study accounted for 29,665 people, well ahead of part-time work, at 17,735. Unemployment was also a common outcome, with 16,235 students, whereas only 3,500 chose voluntary work.

A similar ranking is evident among postgraduates: 2,725 continued their studies and 2,535 took part-time jobs. The figure for unemployment was lower, at 1,625, and voluntary work again attracted the fewest students, at just 345. Graduate numbers exceeded postgraduate numbers in all four categories. The largest gap was in further study, at 26,940, while the smallest was in voluntary work, at 3,155. The ordering of destinations was identical for both groups: further study, part-time work, unemployment and voluntary work.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Before writing the overview, add the four figures for each group (67,135 graduates and 7,230 postgraduates) and express the ratio as approximately 9.3 to 1.
2
Use one sentence to compare the shared ranking, then select the largest and smallest category gaps rather than restating every figure in the conclusion.
3
Use concise overview language such as “Overall” and “In both groups,” and check that each comparison clearly names the two groups being compared.
