Band 6.0

The two bar charts illustrate destination of UK students who are graduate and postgraduate, excluding full-time work, after leaving college in 2008. Overall, it can be clearly seen that the most of Uk graduate and postgraduate students further their studies. Furthermore, their continued to study after leaving college while some students had a part-time job, or were unemployed or did voluntary work.

For graduates, further study was by far the most common destination, at 29,665 students. Part-time employment ranked second, with 17,735, narrowly above unemployment, which accounted for 16,235. Only 3,500 graduates undertook voluntary work, making this the least popular option.

A similar pattern is visible among postgraduates: 2,725 continued their studies, slightly more than the 2,535 who took part-time jobs. Unemployment affected 1,625 people, while just 345 did voluntary work, again the smallest figure. In every category, graduate numbers were substantially higher than postgraduate numbers. The largest gap was in further study, at 26,940 students; the differences were also notable for part-time work and unemployment, while the voluntary-work gap was smaller, at 3,155. Overall, further study led in both groups, while voluntary work remained least common.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Write a two-part overview that names the most and least common destinations for both groups before giving detailed figures.
2
Check every chart figure against its category and group; then use parallel sentences to compare graduate and postgraduate numbers.
3
Proofread the opening specifically for article use, UK capitalization, and subject forms such as “they” rather than “their.”
